Enabling emoticons on your iPhone is actually pretty easy. Trevor showed me how a few days ago and since then people have been asking, so I thought I'd post the instructions.
Note: Only people with iPhones will be able to see these. People with unsupported mobile phones will just see blank squares (based on the tests I've done).
1. Open the App Store and download "Spell Number - Emoji for FREE"
2. Open the Spell Number app and enter the following code: 91929394.59
(UPDATE: Ignore the picture and use code: 91929394.59)
3. Close the Spell Number app and then go to:
Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Japanese
4. Turn Emoji on
5. Close Settings and open up Text Messaging
6. You will now see a globe icon next to the spacebar on the keyboard. Select the globe and you will see emoticons that you can select.

This no longer appears to work. I followed the above steps, but when I got to the japanese keyboards, I did not see the Emoji one. :( Any ideas?

Try to use the numbers:
91929394.59
Then go to Settings, General, Keyboard, International.
Next to JAPANESE there will be an >
click it.
And set EMOJI to ON.
** WARNING ** Only works on iphones that have the emoji emoticon set. On other phones, they receive NOTHING - not even an :-)
Did it today (aug 14, 09) on the new 3GS
Tried it today on my iphone (09/03/09) and emoji doesn't show up...Any other suggestions?

How cool is this? Awesome little application...makes texting a little more fun...at least for the texter since not all the recipients will be able to receive the smileys!

Why am I not getting all of the emoji ones. All I get are a few smileys when I tap the globe?

Hi I have enabled those smileys in my iphone but when i m sending it to any phone other than iphone they are unable to see these smileys they only getting box... is there any one help me for that?

awesome i did the stupid new update and lost it but with this code totally worked out this is like jailbraking your iphone to do things awesome i wonder if their is other codes that will make you iphone do other cool things?????
@Guj - No, the other person does not need to install the app.
Helpful hint: If you are running iOS 4 or later, the following revised steps might help you:
1. You may or may not need to enable the Emoji keyboard, I’m not sure. If you do, follow the instructions above.
2. Make sure your Messages app is closed (press the Home button twice, and hold down on the Messages icon if it is in your recent apps panel down the bottom, until you can tap the – icon in the circle to close it).
3. Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Add New Keyboard… and select the “Emoji” one (not the Japanese Emoji one which doesn’t appear to be there in iOS 4).
Now when you restart the Messages app, the Globe icon will be available to toggle between the English and Emoji modes. Good luck!

i followed the above steps and it doesnt work when i poress the web icon it come up as japanese??
i have a 3gs too??
this didnt work for me, it comes up in japanese stuff..

Only getting Japanese symbols. Where are the emoticons?
Very easy
tried multiple times but neither one of the two japanese language options show a selection for emoji. i've got access to japanese characters with this enabled but no emoticons.
